What does White Water Rafting involve?

It's wet, it's wild and it's wonderful! Moreover, we offer a choice of rafting runs of different technical grades and lengths, which means that almost everyone can give this fun-fuelled activity a go.

In Perthshire, we can take you - by flow - along the Silvery Tay, the longest river in the UK. The Tay is an impressive river to raft on, winding its way through picturesque Perthshire and offering rafting to suit most ages and levels of ability. Our full range of trips includes:

• The River Tay, The Grandtully Run - This is one of the best runs in the country. From Aberfeldy, the excitement builds up gradually after an easy first section through to the final fantastic passage of the white stuff at Grandtully: Length: 5 miles, Time: Half day.

• The River Tay, The Stanley Run - Following the Tay down from Stanley to Thistlebrig, this run offers a similar grade of river to the Grandtully section, but here the rapids, like the adrenalin, last a bit longer. Length: 3 miles, Time: Half day.

• The Tummel River - The Tummel is a guaranteed high-grade river in the summer, when a controlled dam release at weekends keeps the flow going right through to September. You'll find plenty of thrilling action and a fantastic drop as a finale as you raft along this river. Length: 7 miles, Time: Half day.

• The Braan River - This river offers top White Water Rafting after a good rainfall and its features include continuous rapids, plus a great gorge section near the end. Length: 4-9 miles, Time: Half day

• The Awe River - The Awe runs between Oban and Crianlarich. It usually takes about 1.5 hours to head westwards from Perth to our picturesque put-in point. During the summer, we follow the river in our rafts from the dam at Loch Awe to its exit at Loch Etive in the heart of the Highlands. Length: 4-9 miles, Time: Half day.

• The Orchy River - This river in Glen Orchy, west of Crianlarich, is one of the top graded rivers in Britain and offers superb sport which will take your breath away. This rafting option only runs between October and April, but it's certainly well worth waiting for. Length: 5 miles, Time: Half day.

The dam-fed rivers are best in summer, with naturally fed courses being more weather dependent. However, the big grade rivers are still very much an option in winter or during the off season. At Great Away Days, we have White Water Rafting trips suitable for most levels of ability and experience.
